Flights to Japan
We flew from Europe with a connection in Taipei.
Route:
Vienna → Taipei → Tokyo
Osaka → Taipei → Vienna
Total cost for 4 tickets:
≈ 3200€
For long‑haul flights to Japan, this was a pretty good price.
Flights are usually the biggest single expense of the trip.
Accommodation
We moved around quite a bit during the trip.
Our route looked like this:
Tokyo — 5 nights
Fuji area — 1 night
Kyoto — 4 nights
Osaka — 3 nights
Total accommodation cost:
≈ 1800€
We stayed in solid mid‑range hotels — not luxury, but comfortable and family friendly.
You can definitely spend less in Japan if you choose smaller hotels or business hotels.
Transportation
Japan has incredible public transport, but it still adds up.

Car Rental
For exploring the Fuji area we rented a small car for two days.
Total: 90€
That price included the Japanese highway toll card (ETC card), which made things much
easier. Instead of stopping and paying at toll booths, the tolls were automatically charged
when returning the car.
Cars in Japan can be tiny – but perfect for narrow roads.
Driving in Japan was actually much easier than expected, especially outside the big cities.
Attractions & Entry Tickets
Japan has a lot of temples and viewpoints with small entry fees.

Nintendo Museum — 50€
Universal Studios especially can get expensive if you buy express passes, but it was
absolutely worth it for us.
Food in Japan
One of the nicest surprises of the trip.
Japan can be very affordable for food.
We usually spent under 100€ per day for all four of us.
That includes ramen, sushi, street food, coffee, drinks and casual restaurants.
