DisneySea vs Universal Studios Japan — which one is actually better?
We visited both during our trip, and to be honest… they’re not really comparable in the
usual way. They offer completely different experiences, and depending on what you’re
looking for, your answer might be very different from ours.
Still, if we had to choose just one — we would go with Universal. Here’s why.
Universal Studios Japan Review: Our Favourite Park in Japan
Universal Studios Japan surprised us the most. From the moment we entered, the energy
felt completely different. It was louder, more dynamic, and overall just more fun.
One of the biggest highlights was Super Nintendo World. This area alone makes Universal
worth visiting. It’s incredibly immersive, interactive, and works for both kids and adults. It
really feels like stepping into a video game.
Another standout is the Harry Potter area. Even if you’re not a huge fan, the atmosphere is
incredible. Hogwarts looks amazing, and the whole section feels very detailed and well
designed.
And then there’s The Flying Dinosaur rollercoaster.
I didn’t expect it — but it ended up being the best rollercoaster I’ve ever ridden.
Easily.
We also visited during Halloween, which made the experience even better. There were
dancers, street performances, scare actors, and a completely different vibe in the park. It felt
alive the entire day.
We decided to buy an Express Pass for the main attractions (Nintendo World, Harry Potter,
Jaws). It was expensive, but with kids, it made a huge difference. Without it, we would have
spent most of the day waiting in lines.
Another advantage: Universal has longer opening hours. That gives you more flexibility and
makes the day feel less rushed.
Verdict: If you want rides, adrenaline, and a fun atmosphere — Universal wins.
DisneySea
DisneySea is something else entirely.
It’s probably the most beautiful theme park we’ve ever visited. The level of detail is insane.
Every area looks like it belongs in a movie, and the design is on another level.
We mainly visited because our younger child is a big Frozen fan, so the Elsa attraction was a
must. And for that alone, it was worth it.
Other rides we enjoyed were Rapunzel, Peter Pan, and the Raging spirits rollercoaster. They were
all good — but compared to Universal, they didn’t feel as exciting.
The biggest downside for us was the waiting time. 90+ minutes was completely normal for
popular attractions. Since we only had a regular ticket, we spent a lot of time standing in
lines.
We also walked a lot. By the end of the day, our legs were completely done.
Compared to Universal, the rides also felt less intense. DisneySea focuses more on
atmosphere than adrenaline.
Verdict: If you want Disney magic, incredible visuals, and a more relaxed experience —
DisneySea is perfect.

Tokyo DisneySea vs Universal Studios Japan: What We Actually Paid
One of the biggest differences between Tokyo DisneySea and Universal Studios Japan was the price.
And honestly, the difference was pretty huge. 😅
During our family trip to Japan in October and November 2025, we visited both parks with our two children.
Here’s what we paid for our family of four:

In euros, that’s approximately €168 for Tokyo DisneySea versus €682 for Universal Studios Japan, including our four Express Passes, based on exchange rates at the time of our November 2025 visit.
Without Express Passes, Universal Studios Japan would have cost us approximately €216 — much closer to DisneySea.
At Universal Studios Japan, we purchased the Universal Express Pass 4 – Race & Thrills – All Ages for everyone.
That added ¥83,200 to our visit, more than twice the cost of the regular admission tickets!
So was Universal Studios Japan really four times more expensive?
For our family, yes. But it wasn’t a like-for-like ticket comparison.
We paid extra for shorter waits on selected Universal attractions, while at DisneySea we visited with standard admission.
The Express Pass made a big difference to our experience at Universal Studios Japan, but it’s an optional expense, not something every visitor needs to buy.
Without the Express Passes, our USJ tickets would have cost ¥38,600, much closer to DisneySea’s ¥30,000.
Was the Universal Express Pass Worth It?
For us, it was.
We wanted to experience as much as possible in one day, particularly the major attractions, without spending most of our time waiting in queues.
But I wouldn’t automatically recommend spending that much extra.
If you’re visiting on a quieter day, have more time or don’t mind waiting, standard admission might be enough.
And if you’re on a tighter budget, Tokyo DisneySea was significantly cheaper for our family.
Just remember that ticket prices, Express Pass options and attraction access can change depending on your visit date.
Which Is Better for Kids: Tokyo DisneySea or Universal Studios Japan?
Both parks have plenty to offer families, but for our kids, Universal Studios Japan was the clear winner.
The biggest reasons? The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World.
These two areas made Universal feel especially exciting for Maj and Naja. Walking into worlds they already knew from films and video games was a completely different experience from visiting a traditional theme park.
And honestly, we adults were just as impressed.
Tokyo DisneySea was incredible in its own way. The atmosphere, detailed scenery and themed areas made it one of the most beautiful theme parks we’ve visited.
But when it came to the experiences our kids enjoyed most, Universal had the advantage.
That doesn’t mean Universal Studios Japan is automatically better for every family.
If your children love Disney characters, Frozen, Rapunzel or more relaxed attractions, Tokyo DisneySea might be the better choice.
But for families with kids who are already into Harry Potter, Mario and more adventurous rides, we’d recommend Universal Studios Japan.
For our family, Universal won — even though it cost us considerably more.
If You Can Only Visit One: DisneySea or Universal Studios Japan?
If your Japan itinerary only allows time for one theme park, which one should you choose?
Having visited both with our kids, here’s how I’d decide.
Choose Universal Studios Japan if:
- Your family loves Harry Potter, Mario or Nintendo.
- You prefer exciting rides and interactive experiences.
- You’re willing to spend extra on an Express Pass to reduce waiting times.
- You want a theme park that offers plenty of excitement for both kids and adults.
Choose Tokyo DisneySea if:
- Your children love Disney, Frozen or Rapunzel.
- You appreciate beautiful scenery and immersive themed environments.
- You prefer a slightly more relaxed theme park experience.
- You’re looking to keep admission costs lower.
Which Would We Choose Again?
Universal Studios Japan.
Super Nintendo World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter made the biggest impression on our family. Combined with the rides, they gave us an experience we enjoyed even more than DisneySea.
But here’s the thing: Universal cost us approximately €682, compared with €168 for DisneySea.
Most of that difference came from our optional Express Passes. Without them, the admission prices would have been much closer.
So if you’re travelling on a tighter budget, DisneySea is still a fantastic choice.
And if your itinerary allows both parks?
We certainly wouldn’t tell you to skip either one. 😅
