Puglia Off Season: 5 Honest Things That Surprised Us

Thinking about visiting Southern Italy in the off-season?

Puglia looks like a dream on Instagram — white towns, turquoise water, aperol in the sun…
but visiting Puglia in the off-season is a completely different experience.

We visited in March, and let’s just say… it wasn’t exactly what we expected.

Here’s what nobody really tells you about Puglia off-season.

When is off-season in Puglia?

Regions off-season usually runs from November to March.
During this time:

  • towns are much quieter
  • many restaurants and bars are closed
  • the overall vibe is slower and less lively

This can be a good or bad thing — depending on what you’re looking for.

1. It can feel… very empty.

We expected “less crowded”.
What we got:

  • towns that feel almost empty after 1–2 hours
  • very few people around
  • quiet streets even during the day

Places like Locorotondo and parts of Monopoli looked amazing… but didn’t feel very alive.

If you love slow travel → perfect
If you want energy and vibe → might surprise you

2. A LOT of places are closed.

This was the biggest surprise.

  • many restaurants closed
  • bars shut
  • limited options

We had moments where finding lunch wasn’t that easy.
That spontaneous “sit down for a drink anywhere” vibe?
Not really there in off-season.

3. Weather changes EVERYTHING.

Puglia is very visual.
So when the weather isn’t perfect:

  • everything looks different
  • the vibe changes completely

Alberobello is still amazing — but sunshine makes a HUGE difference.

Tip: If you’re visiting Southern Italy in the off-season, try to plan your key days around good
weather.

4. Some places look better than they feel.

Polignano a Mare
Views = incredible
Experience = a bit underwhelming

Locorotondo
Beautiful, clean, photogenic
But done in under an hour

Martina Franca
Nice stop
But nothing that made us stay longer

5. BUT… some places are absolutely worth it!

Matera
One of the most unique places we’ve ever seen. A city built into caves — unreal experience.

Alberobello
Super unique, something you don’t see anywhere else.
